sometimes it's amazing how far a little perpendicularity goes. nice how the curves contrast with the implied vertical line. also nice how the implied vertical almost creates a golden section.

3. posted by 990000 at 17:56 on November 29, 2002

oh, also nice how the explicit vertical on the left is telegraphed into the implied vertical on the right. there's also a nice perpendicular dialogue created by the lamp axis and the two verticals.

if something nice that takes four years to make is appreciated for four centuries, then another that takes four seconds to make should be appreciated for at least four minutes--not the milliseconds it takes to download on your underappreciated cable modem.

anyway, that wasn't my point. the point--now that i am forced to spell it out for you--is that there can be something more to a work of art than what you initially see.

pay attention to craftsmanship, not just novelty. look beyond what is "cool" and value timeless things like geometry, proportion, composition. read up on Michelangelo, Palladio or LeCorbusier and read about regulating lines (among other things). use your brain once in a while and stop watching so much TV. it'll turn you into a barbarian.

Cool, reminds me of thinking about visualizing a musictracker without fixed pattern rows. Like a neurotic hihat is a very short path from left to right and below that, drawing a path for the bassdrum somewhat longer. Drawing a vertical path through those other paths should on collission for example exclude playing the sample, so there is a break in a monotonous beat or some other function applied to it..

Never mind.

"funky caching" is what I usually try to do too on templated php-powered sites; generating static pages on access rather than on saving of data simply makes a lot more sense once you're used to it.

Although the concept of using a custom 404 php-script hadn't occured to me yet: checking if the appropriate static copy exists and the optional generating occurs in one main index.php. [via kryogenix.org]

1. posted by poi at 01:55 on November 25, 2002

Great idea.
If the amount of user types is reasonably low "funky caching" could even provide a certain "baked page" according to the rights of the user. And only "fried pages" to the Administrators.

2. posted by milov at 11:10 on November 25, 2002

What I do is I check all parameters that might influence the output of a script (entry, date, tmpl, logged-in-status etc.), combine them into a unique filename, and then check if a static copy with that filename exists; if not, generate it.

3. posted by poi at 12:26 on November 25, 2002

I rather had in mind to keep the filename simple and to store the variants of the static pages in seperated folders and then simply readfile() the right static page if you don't want to show your "funky folders name" to the users.
But basically that's the idea, and it's simple, elegant and efficient, I LOVE it.

4. posted by milov at 13:28 on November 25, 2002

Oh definitely. This filename that I'm generating stays hidden to the user... you don't want to uglify your urls too much. For example, the hidden filename for this page is milov_php2070780107_tmpl1036941578_login1_comments1782.txt
(also taking into account the lastmodified date of php-scripts and templates).

5. posted by milov at 13:29 on November 25, 2002

or milov_php2070780107_tmpl1036941578_login0_comments1782.txt for you :)

6. posted by Tim at 15:08 on January 20, 2003

don't overlook another awesome aspect to this hack that I use all the time in Vignette based site - it's called OID overstuffing - basically, you stuff parameters into the url BEFORE the .html or whatever your extension is. Use something like | or @ to separate the variables. Then your template does a split on the special character. So a url might end like this "/weather_framework@worldview@rome.html" This way you get a docroot full of generated files that can be fully cached, and still pass multiple parameters to the template.

The document.<formName>.<elementName> syntax instead of document.forms[<formName>].element[<elementName>] was one of the worst mistakes made at Netscape in creting the language - and Microsoft didn't make it especially much better.

How should you handle a form named "forms" with a child element named "forms", for instance? document.forms["forms"].elements["forms"] is the full format - but does document.forms["forms"] not reference by short form the element at the same time it by full form referece the form? Or how about an element with the id "all" in IE?

sidewalk, rodenrijselaan rotterdam

1. posted by hotmail.com,rhornstra,Roel at 12:25 on November 09, 2002

2. posted by Owentje at 13:00 on November 09, 2002

Again with the css borders and the animating and the random...
The border-style:inset; actually looks rather different in Mozilla than in Internet Explorer, so try it in both. I kinda prefer the chunky 3D way IE renders them...

Is dit het nieuwe toekomstige NUTS gebouw op Laakhaven? Het lijkt er erg veel op. Maar lijken alle in aanbouw zijnde gebouwen niet op elkaar? ;)

I think #23 (View Source: View the syntax coloured source of a page, without having to view it in Notepad) isn't particularly a feature. You can't do anything with the 'view source'-option of Mozilla other than view. In IE, besides viewing you can edit the document and save it locally.

2. posted by poi at 14:34 on November 05, 2002

I like both Mozilla and IE. But Mozilla isn't safe of vulnerabilities, see http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/27934.html and http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html

3. posted by milov at 01:33 on November 06, 2002

True, but I think Moz bugs get fixed quicker.
