XHTML 1.1

Although I'm not quite sure why yet, I changed the doctype of this template from XHTML 1.0 to XHTML 1.1 and am sending a Content-type: application/xhtml+xml header to browsers that support it, meaning Mozilla will regard each page as xml and won't show the content if there's an error in the markup.

Which meant spending a couple of hours going through the monthly archives, correcting each entry that triggered an xml parse error. Now all of the 2300+ entries are valid well-formed x(h)tml and I have learned to never ever not end my &'s in amp; or use < instead of &lt; in javascript: hrefs (damn those bookmarklet for-loops).

Nice piece of work. I am still wondering if I will use the application/xhtml+xml content header. One of the reasons: checking every single entry I posted sofar.

2. posted by Arthur! at 18:22 on October 30, 2003

I've changed my content-header and all my pages work. I use MT as CMS and I've used a couple of plugins that replace 'non-validating' content. It's not perfect (yet) but at least it works.

I haven't had any problems since I switched. I don't think the 'fear' of checking every page should stand in the way of changing you content-header.

for some reason, in Firebird, if i try middleclicking on a link on milov.nl, i get the logitech scroll wheel instead of opening the link in a new tab. but middle clicking works fine on any other site. anyone else experiencing this? does it have anything to do with the doctype?

4. posted by milov at 23:02 on October 30, 2003

I hadn't noticed it yet (using a graphics tablet without a middle mouse button) but yes, it's apparently a Firebird bug resulting from the new doctype / application/xhtml+xml header. The same thing happens on http://simon.incutio.com/ and http://annevankesteren.nl/ .

Keith David

A list of actors that coincidentally appear more than once in my 12-movie dvd collection:
  1. Keith David, 3 times
This concludes the list of actors that coincidentally appear more than once in my 12-movie dvd collection. Here's a screenshot of Mr. David in each of those three movies (can you guess which ones they are?):

1. posted by Tuuur at 13:09 on October 28, 2003

I never even heard of this more-than-once appearing actor in your 12-movie dvd collection, so no; I can't guess.

Or maybe this ignorance is just the right prerequisite for guessing! Let's see:
1. Reservoir dogs?
2. Streets of Philadelphia?
3. Lord of the rings?

(I didn't see any of these...)

2. posted by milov at 13:20 on October 28, 2003

You could have at least limited your guesses to movies that actually appear on the IMDb page I linked :)

3. posted by huphtur at 15:27 on October 28, 2003

i liked pitch black. people hate on it, cuz it has vin diesel in it, but i think its a pretty cool movie. i read somewhere they are doing a sequel.

4. posted by Tuuur at 15:37 on October 28, 2003

@milov> yeah, but that would be much less guessing then... :-)

5. posted by milov at 22:38 on October 28, 2003

huphtur: I read about the sequel too, on http://www.pitcherblacker.com/ .

One or two of Vin Diesel's lines in Pitch Black might have been rather cringe-worthy, but on the whole I liked the concept and story and cast a lot.

The dvd is cool in that it has not one but two commentary tracks (one with the director and Vin Diesel and Cole Hauser, and the other with director, producer and special effects guy).

Sidenote, a little bit of trivia: Cole Hauser has acted with both Keith David and David Keith (in High Incident).

6. posted by tbit at 04:51 on October 29, 2003

well i have no idea what the first movie is but the second is They Live and while I recognize the third, I cannot place it even after looking in the IMDB list.

Keith David, ever asking, "Or is it David Keith ?" is one of those actors who gives great voice and is recognizable in dozens of things but never to be seen.

7. posted by milov at 12:46 on October 29, 2003

Maybe it helps if I mention that the movies are listed chronologically... And that two of them are by the same director.

Yeah I dl'ed the The Chronicles of Riddick trailer off of http://suprnova.org/ yesterday. I'm not sure what to make of it, seems like a completely different kind of film than Pitch Black was. Lots of nonsense mythology etc.

(I liked how Pitch Black drew you into the situation without providing any convoluted backstory. Like some of the better Outer Limits sci-fi episodes.)

11. posted by huphtur at 00:11 on December 21, 2003

Nope, I'm not feelin this preview either. It looks like another 'here comes the hero to save the day' blockbuster.

We must also not forget that Vin Diesel has a complete different audience now and his 'fans' expect nothing less from him.

It's also not written by the Wheat brothers anymore. But by Twohy the original PB director. He also "wrote" Waterworld. Now THAT was one amazing movie hehe.

Oof, should we still go check out the movie when it comes out?

The Wheat brother havent done anything after PB. I wonder what happened.

12. posted by milov at 01:25 on December 21, 2003

On the other hand, I see Twohy also wrote The Arrival, which I liked a lot (partly for its obvious parallels with Half-Life). Another movie that doesn't try to explain too much, only letting the audience know as much as the main character does.

Click once to overlay the current page with a div containing a 50x50 grid pattern. Click again to hide. Should be handy for testing alignment, quick dimension estimates, etc. Tested in IE6 and Firebird 0.7.

(Suggestions for better grid patterns are welcome; grid9.gif looks OK here but looks a bit iffy on lighter backgrounds.)

referrers per entry

I've been logging all specific referring urls for each weblog entry for a while now, but never really made them visible. Until now, that is. Try a couple of random entries and you're bound to see it in action somewhere...

To prevent the entry pages from turning into some sort of Google trap, search engine bots don't get to see the referrer lists at all (via a User-Agent check of common bot names).

1. posted by Arthur! at 11:38 on October 15, 2003

redesign

Doing a little redesigning... Usually my redesigns start with a new background photo, but since I couldn't decide on a good one I did the layout first this time (along with a reworking of the php and html code).

A big change is that I'm now showing inline entry titles for some entries (until now the titles were only visible in the <title>-tag), so you know what you're reading or looking at.

The html for this 'ere weblog column is still rather tag-soupy at the moment getting better, but the menus on the left have been converted into lean <ul> machines with a hover effect inspired by Listamatic.

1. posted by P01 at 23:27 on October 13, 2003

Nice changes, I especially like the hover effect and the brighter shade of gray on the form element having the focus. Having the title and the date on the main page is also a good point.

The H2 are a little too big to my taste, and the IL > A may be 100% wide.

Whatever, it's good to see more and more people moving to XHTML + CSS.

2. posted by Eduardo Marquetti at 16:01 on October 14, 2003

Ja! Nice.
But I don´t know the font here is so smal... Hmmm, I think I must install more fonts here.

3. posted by milov at 20:56 on October 14, 2003

P01: I actually did specify display: block for the LI > A's at first, but found that a little too distracting when moving the mouse around the page - very easy to 'accidentally' light up the links by moving over the rightmost edge of the link.

Eduardo: I just checked my site out in IE6 and noticed some weird font size stuff as well; is your Text Size set to something smaller than Medium?

Perhaps I'll just replace the em's with pixel-sizes. Users that want to be able to increase/decrease font size should then just use another browser than IE.

4. posted by Kethinov at 23:33 on October 14, 2003

Looks good. Like the dots. Like the brightening of current forms. I also like how if you don't include a "subject" on a news entry, or on a box widget, or whatever we want to call them, it doesn't look out of place.

5. posted by P01 at 01:54 on October 15, 2003

I've looked the site with IE6.0 and Fb0.6.1 and the only a difference of font size I've noticed is on the H3 tags that are slightly bigger in IE.

No box model hack have been used so there's some minor differences between the browsers.

milov: Regarding the LI > A, I had in mind something in the vein of IFTHENELSE but you're right when you say it may have been too distracting.

7. posted by Woudloper at 09:25 on October 20, 2003

Milov, concerning your point about using pixel font sizes in stead of em/pt font sizes I can only encourage you to do so. My textsize is always on 'smallest', as I am working with a 120 DPI screen (21") and many pages have a very large font when I start load them, therefore I put it on the 'smallest' option. When visiting your site I always need to enlarge the fontsize because here it is even smaller.

Concerning your choice I can only say that you can read the following article at 'A List Apart':

http://www.alistapart.com/stories/fear4/

Here you can read about the choice for pixels of pt/em. Furthermore when you would like to introduce Pixel Font Sizes I think you also need to use the 'StyleSwitcher' so you give the visitors the opportunity to set the (pixel) font size themeselve, also see the 'A List Apart' website. Zeldman mentioned last year that using pixel fonts is better thant pt/em font size, with the remark that you can work with a styleswitcher..

8. posted by milov at 11:28 on October 20, 2003

Alright, pixel sizes are go! You might have to reload to get the updated stylesheet.
Thanks for the input, Woudloper.

It will be interesting Kethinov. Not just nice things are 'nice' to photograph. Try!

My guestbook has been getting quite a bit of comment spam lately. Someone from *.wanadoo.fr (who isn't POI) is posting comments under a variety of names and urls, all pointing to crappy casino/pharmacy/ringtone sites. I've been letting it slide until now because I sort of admire his/her effort of thinking up new "compliments" about my site, as if they were genuine guestbook entries.

Then there's the repeated buup114 spammer, who, according to my logs, opens entry 1516, posts the same exact comment and leaves again. Never mind that the text is completely indecipherable...

I like how I've maintained an almost zero percent moderation rate with regard to comments (I don't even remove double-posted comments), but I think I will be removing at least the urls from these ones, to discourage further attempts at enhancing ones Pagerank like this.

I haven't yet encountered this on my weblog, luckily... I think we should think of something simple to prevent this from happening, something cunning... I don't know yet... I'm still workin' on it. (no, not something like www.fark.com where you have to register first... it must be more clever than that)

what about banning the ip?

3. posted by jimmy at 09:40 on October 05, 2003

Two weeks ago somebody pasted about 50 urls, about penis-enlargments!, in an entry from 5 months back. Probably he didn`t know I get an email when somebody posts a comment. Otherwise I would never have found it.
And then I banned the IP Huphtur :-)

This is the biggest reason why I don't include comment features on my weblog. But I've started working on a new open source php/mysql weblog based on the source code for mine and I'm thinking of including commenting abilities. But depending on what kind of weblog you maintain, how popular it is, and what kind of person you are you may get varying degrees of crapfloods.

I'm no stranger to being crapflooded myself with my history of using the net, so I'm reluctant to incorporate the feature at all.

these comment-spammers obviously use some sort of automated script to do this...

what would happen if your comment-form would hold some javascript that would set some hidden fields. If the hidden fields aren't there the comment won't be accepted. My guess is the automated spam-script wouldn't be able to run the javascript and just post...

No action required from end users. Your browser just needs to proof it's a browser and not some spam-script.

feedback, ideas?

Alas, few ISP offers static IPs so IP banning may kick some real users.

For instance, Wanadoo ( a popular frensh RTC, ISDN & ADSL ISP ) have 2-3 big IP ranges. The users get a new IP every time they reconnect, and to avoid home made web hosting, Wanaddo deconnect its users every 24H.

Whatever if the comment system is flooded by the same IP or URL ( the ones given by the user and the ones in the comment itself ) they should be temporary banned and noticed to the weblog author who can eventually blacklist them.

Unfortunately the weblog author have to keep an eye on the comments logs.

Feeding some hidden fields with hash values is a good idea, but server side code should be involved 'cause client side can easily be reverse engineered.

The best idea I've heard is to add a text field and ask the user to enter the letters of a random string generated ( with some noise ) via GD. That idea have some accessibility problems :( but it would make spam-bots unefficient.

Finally, IMHO user comments adds a great value to weblogs.

OK, how about this:

(I'm assuming JavaScript ASP here, but it's really simple so any server side language would be ok)

in your form place this hidden field:
<%@ language="JavaScript" %>
...
<input type="hidden" name="t1" value="<%=(new Date()).getTime()%>"/>

on the server the comment-processor should have this:
<%@ language="JavaScript" %>

<%
// Get form-creation time stamp
var t1 = parseInt(Request("t1"));

// Get current time
var t2 = (new Date()).getTime();

// Check whether timing ok (>3 seconds, < 1 hour)
if ((t2 - t1 < 3000) || (t2 - t1 > 3600000))
{
// Stop
Response.end();
}
else
{
// Handle comment submission
// ...
}
%>

Result: only comments that took more than 3 seconds since the page was created are submitted.
Human submitters can never open, read, write and submit a comment within 3 seconds. Automatic script will do it a lot faster. They will get filtered out.

So? Is this an idea worth while testing?

Are people really getting automated comment spam? Seems to me that most of it is just manually entered, requires relatively little effort anyway for instant result (a link to your site).

Milov:: concerning the comments there are many discussions going on. According to the Dutch blog of Adam Curry they also discussed the comments on the Bloggercon. Maybe you can wait en see what he will write about it in his report about it. He promised to do so...

I was thinking of spam-bot as a mean to increase the pagerank of a naughty site. Those sites have the ressource to do that. They already spam mail boxes with poor results. At least spamming some weblogs have a noticeable effect and may increase their ad. incomes since they get better places on search engines.

A set of "human like" comments can be used to make believe they come from a lonely soul that have nothing better to do.

Using JavaScript to prevent spam is a very bad idea. A lot of people disable JavaScript by default, because it is a security risk.

13. posted by Lon at 22:10 on October 07, 2003

who's using javascript to prevent spam? if you were referring to my proposal: it's javascript, but purely server-side.

and i don't think JS in the browser is a security risk.
and i do think you can't surf the web in a decent way having js disabled. i guess you would be used to having non-functional pages.

Legal Abandonware - collection of classic PC games for download. Best game of the lot might be Beneath a Steel Sky; I actually bought the diskette version of this adventure game in 1994, now I can try the speech-enhanced CD version.
