7. posted by milov at 22:02 on December 27, 2003

Some joker from *.intensive.net was spending quite some time posting dozens of comments to all sorts of entries... to piss spammers like this off I like to 'break' the urls by adding SPAM to the end of them (which also prevents them from appearing in the Recent comments list).

He didn't quite get the hint at first but did finally leave after I triggered an infinite amount of browser windows to open on his computer every time he tried to post another comment.

1. posted by Jeroen at 00:52 on December 28, 2003

If you can remember back to the bitter winters of the late 1970s and early 80s you might also recall that there was much discussion in scientific circles at the time about whether or not the freezing winter conditions were a portent of a new ice age.
Over the past couple of decades such warnings have been drowned out by the great global warming debate and by consideration of how society might cope in future with a sweltering planet rather than an icebound one. Seemingly, the fact that we are still within an interglacial period, during which the ice has largely retreated to its polar fastnesses, has been forgotten - and replaced with the commonly-held view that one good thing you can say about global warming is that it will at least stave off the return of the glaciers.....

Just an observation: middle clicking links to create new tabs in Firebird on your page while autoscrolling is enabled doesn't open a new tab while on other websites it does.

2. posted by milov at 12:13 on December 24, 2003

Yeah, that's a bug in some older Firebird builds; for some reason the scroll-thingy appears when middle-clicking links on XHTML sites that send an application/xhtml+xml header. Upgrading to any newer build should fix it (I'm using http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=39875 at the moment).

The rendered page had grown to such a large size over the year it ran, that it was costing me quite a bit of bandwidth, solely from Google visitors and such (it had long since faded from the public view). Plus the Javascript build time caused IE to completely freeze. Since the structure was pretty meaningless anyway, I decided to disable it.

I wonder how the Meme Tree will scale :)

to all whom are looking for a playlist, or asking about a specific song: do a google search and find "streamripper for winamp". it is a powerful and easy utility to rip songs from internet radio stations. It separates the files and names them for you. After a day or two, you will quickly have a copy of not just a playlist, but the songs themselves. No laws against copying of the radio.....yet ;)

Well, you have to register before you can post, and I think there's some rule about having to have posted a certain number of comments before being allowed a front-page post.

There is the occasional nonsense post but those get deleted pretty quickly by moderator mathowie.

This new Internet Explorer Vulnerability adds a new dimension to the old http://www.fakehost.com@realhost.com url trick; by including a 0x01 character after the "@" character, the real hostname remains hidden!

Meaning that Internet Explorer users can no longer trust any url they see in their Address Bar to be the actual url of the current page, unless they typed it themselves. [via Simon Willison]

Update: Mozilla is also partly affected by this vulnerability, in that it doesn't show the real hostname in the status bar (address bar is ok, however). See MozillaZine.

Great!
Maybe it would be interesting to keep this on the frontpage here?

Actually, there's been a 'random' link at the end of the menu for a while now.

Milo kindly sent me a 1280x1024 (actually 1280x960) version. I'll kindly host it, but not without Milo's permission. ;)

Very well Kethinov, I'm convinced. You can place it online if you want and link to it from here (I don't have access to the big version at the moment anyway)...

Purrint is a handy little Windows tool for enhancing your PrintScreen button. I configured it to load at startup and silently save a .png screenshot on every press of PrintScreen (while still copying to clipboard of course).

After using it for a while now, my screenshots folder has become a sort of personal Desktop-log, a handy way to find out what apps I had open/what I was working on on a particular day in the past.

This is great !
I configure it to save the png file on my desktop in order to drag it easily to the messenger : very fluid solution for me to show graphic works in progress. (tip: Alt+PrintScreen prints only the active window).
I ve the same desktop log habit, i post some on my site.
