I did a "Mobile Media Mode" version (sorry, couldn't think of any better marketing hype term to use ) for one of the sites I worked on:http://mmm.esfootwear.com/
When can we read milov.nl on the mobile phone?

3. posted by milov at 17:52 on February 01, 2004

If you have an Orange Smartphone SPV you already can :)
Its Pocket Internet Explorer shows my site without stylesheets, but it's still perfectly readable.

4. posted by huphtur at 20:19 on February 01, 2004

my nokia3650 displays with stylesheets plus 81267 bytes of data is a bit too much for me.

ben benieuwd of ik ooit nog m'n SPV krijg :(

6. posted by milov at 12:45 on February 02, 2004

huph: most of that data is the posted photos. I suppose I could filter those out but then there wouldn't be much to see. Although.... I could convert them to thumbnails.

7. posted by huphtur at 17:17 on February 02, 2004

true, most of the load are the images. a version without the sidebar would work perfect.

8. posted by milov at 17:22 on February 02, 2004

Do you know if your phone supports media="handheld"?

9. posted by huphtur at 17:28 on February 02, 2004

it doesn't. i tried all the css tricks and hacks. it keeps loading the css no matter what.

10. posted by JW at 11:19 on February 12, 2004

My Opera (for Symbian OS) shows milov.nl perfectly (with or without CSS [option]) on my Nokia7650 and it supports media="handheld" as well.

So Huph, install Opera (if you don't use it already) on you're Nokia3650 and you're fine.

Thumbnailing the photo's for handheld would be nice, GPRS data tarifs aren't cheap at T-Mobile.

2. posted by Micah at 09:08 on January 26, 2004

Ah, finally a place to rant about this article--or at least, to express some misgiving. Try disabling stylesheets for that page; you'll find that the text doesn't flow, because the "tooltips" are not part of the normal text, they are extra definitions and notes added after the flow was established. Thus, a user with a CSS-disabled browser (or a screen-reader) would be confused by the lack of continuity in the text. That's why this (pretty trivial) use of CSS was never put forward before, in my mind. Tooltips should either be left to the browser, as Mozilla does with the contents of the TITLE attribute, or with Javascript, importing text that does not disrupt the flow of the text.

3. posted by Kethinov at 02:30 on January 27, 2004

Why on earth would someone disable stylesheets? I'm not going to cater to the twisted minority that actually does with the pages that I design. I think that's a fantatsic article. One of the best I've seen linked from here in a very long time.

4. posted by milov at 10:22 on January 27, 2004

To be fair, it's not just about users purposely disabling their stylesheets; sometimes it's the browser.
For example, I'm posting this from my phone using the stylesheet-less Pocket IE, and the added spans do make the text look kinda funky.

5. posted by Low at 10:27 on January 27, 2004

I have to agree with Micah on this one. Sure, the span hover thingies are neat, but why re-invent the wheel? The same goes for those ugly-ass tooltips that were implemented at MeFi a while back. *shudder*

6. posted by milov at 11:09 on January 27, 2004

**now switching back to pro-custom-hovers-mode ^_^**
One big advantage of (some of) these custom tooltip solutions is that they appear instantly on mouseover of a link; with regular tooltips there's a delay before they appear, which means I often don't even notice them (especially when using a graphics tablet).

integrating javascript into stylesheets

Ben Nolan's non-link element hovering trick for Internet Explorer (that normally only allows :hover styles on links) is pretty handy, but what really impressed me about it is his way of integrating arbitrary Javascript functions into the stylesheet itself:
body {
  background: url("
    javascript:
      document.body.onload = function(){
        ...custom js here...
      }
  ");
}
By specifying a rule like this in the browser's user stylesheet, it might even be possible to run a custom set of Javascript commands on opening of any visited website. (Although my brief attempt at making this work proved unsuccessful.) [via webgraphics]

It is really interesting indead. I already read the discussion thread in the forum of Tweakers.net, see:

http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/831654/last

The interesting part is that it is somehow specified in the W3 specs of CSS2, see:
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/generate.html#content
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/media.html

2. posted by Richard Soderberg at 01:01 on January 13, 2004

The spec also specifies that "Generated content does not alter the document tree. In particular, it is not fed back to the document language processor (e.g., for reparsing)".

It seems IE is ignoring this directive, which I think is right.

3. posted by Richard Soderberg at 01:13 on January 13, 2004

IE is right, that is. Not the directive. I think the directive is shor-sighted and limiting -- but in the face of embedding active content in CSS, well, maybe I can see their point of view.
