I'm a 33-year-old freelance webdeveloper and photographer living near The Hague, The Netherlands.
This is my personal weblog, where I often post selections of my favourite photos.
Sometimes I make art with code.

its supposed to be a peaceful scene of nature. a romanticist might have painted something such as this to signify the beuty in nature, of the changing seasons and the life within :)
The guy acts like css layout like in zen garden is the end all to web design. Tables are far more scalable in the long run than div/css layout. Sure you can design a site to workn fine with css layout. Your's is a good example. But in the end, if you want to design a template that can truly be scaled to different sizes, alignments, and positions, you use tables.
Finally, you don't need spacer gifs to design pixel perfect table layouts cross browser. That guy kind of acts like it's always been necessary. I still do table based layouts and I haven't touched a spacer gif in years.

Well there's good table based design and bad table based design. As far as table layouts go, yours is exceptionally cleanly coded. But it is an exception :)
I don't see tables offering all that much flexibility with regard to changing the layout. For example, I like being able to control via a stylesheet whether a page section appears as a column on the right or on the left, or as a paragraph at the top even. In a table based layout, that'll always mean rewriting the html.
Well, if you really want to make websites backwards compatible you will have to use tables. It’s like I told a friend; “it’s the new nerd thing telling everybody your page doesn’t have tables”, it’s like some years ago, people telling each other that they where coding html in notepad and expecting respect of some kind. Aligning and positioning can be done in css but you cannot expect everybody to use the most modern browser out there. (Check for instance http://pr0n.braincast.nl in Netscape 4.*, link not work safe!!!)
Yeah I bet those Netscape 4 users are real picky about the layout of their pr0n sites being pixel perfect....?!
Seriously, you actually know people that are still using Netscape 4? It's like 7 years old. I figure people that surf with a broken browser (which NS4 is) are used to seeing broken layouts all the time anyway.
That's true, not many people using that piece of crap but I encountered lots of businesses that still use Nutscrape as a tool to verify html code before they’ll implement your banner or other stuff. Not that I’m really happy about it to say the least.
Huphtur I'm not against CSS, I'm against people believing that divs/css can truly replace tables/css.
With divs, float: left;, display: inline;, and so on you can never TRULY emulate rows, cells, rowspan, and colspan. Much less cells which automatically resizing based on content size.
Got a row with 3 cells? Want to add another? Fine just add another td. Got 3 left floating divs? Want to add another to use 100% width and not wrap over? Not only do you add the div code, but you have to adjust the width properties of the other divs.
I tried for weeks to use divs/css to have the bragging rights to say "no tables"
But I found that every approach I used ended up being nothing but a cheap hack, which required more effort than just using a simple, tried and true table.
To sum up my argument: You don't need to abandon tables to embrace CSS.
Kethinov: You're right, it's a bit of work to insert another column in a CSS based layout, but not that much.
Let's be pragmatic : how often do we have to change a layout ? And when we have to, it's certainly easier/faster to just insert a DIV and tune/add some CSS rules, than diving in a bunch of table tags to find where to insert the content and eventually update the rowspan/colspan attributes of the neighbour cells.
On the other hand, the use of Web Standard is heavilly justified by some accessibilty and SEO constraints which may not be the top priorities for every projects.
Euhm guys, does semantics ring a bell? Tables are only allowed for tabular data, not as grid for lay-out purposes to place non tabular data in the right place.
HTML is a structured semantic language, like SGML, so use it in the right semantic way for structuring of your data and use CSS for the presetaion of you data.
It is oll in the specs, just learn to read them right.
JW is right... and if I might add something; talk about using table hacked layouts for the sake of backwards compatability always makes me chuckle -- try to run your table hacked site on Mozaic or Netscape 1 -- we'll talk then (and yes, using XHTML and CSS properly IS compatable with mentioned browsers). ;)
The slope of the roof is interresting. With the perspective, it's almost aligned with the front of the building. And the dark color gives a precious aspect.
first I thought the bright part in the upper right was a window, a blue wall and a yellow wall, with some machinery attached to it.
How often your mind tries to find a mental picture when looking at things...
Anybody want to be invited to Breedster and get an ascii-insect of their own? My bug has laid a couplewhole bunch of eggs that are waiting to be hatched :)
Update: seriously, I have like 18 20 eggs left. Wouldn't want them to go to waste.
I'm all out of eggs at the moment, sorry :|
I would love to join Breedster. If you have any eggs left, would you please donate one? :)
